He had wanted to chase after the girl and try to reason with her, but Lorena waltzed through the door seconds after Teagan escaped, costing Lucas valuable minutes to explain exactly why the room was empty. Growling in frustration, he finally made his way out the door, not surprised when he didn't catch a sight of Teagan in the bright sunlight. Damn it! Where had she gone?
He grit his teeth together, deciding to drop pursuit. Accepting the small defeat would eventually pay off in the long run. The last thing he needed was to be on Teagan's bad side, and if she didn't want to talk to anyone, even him, then it was time to give her space. Lucas took off his hat and ran his hand through his short, dark hair. Now what?
Time to do some research. Walking quickly to his own dorm, Lucas grabbed a laptop off of one of the other counselor’s beds. The meat bag made a big deal about any of the kids touching it, but he had all but shoved it at Lucas on the first day of camp in a feeble attempt at friendship. He chuckled slightly at the fool’s ignorance. If Daimon only knew a small portion of what he was getting into, the kid would run all the way back to his mom in Montana, tears streaming down the sides of his face. Lucas logged on and accessed the homepage for Washington State University.
Ten minutes later his quiet work was interrupted by angry shouts coming from outside. Lucas shut the laptop and took a few steps to the window to see what had disturbed him. Across the way, the hunters were in some sort of confrontation with the Director. Curious. Lucas careful shut the cabin door behind him, put his hands in his pockets and stared in the direction of the shouting. Wait- was that Teagan with them? So the child had been serious about her desperation to leave the camp.
Lucas paused next to the Director right as the hunters entered the car. He glanced at the large man next to him, suddenly wishing he had clearly heard what Aiden had said to him. Keith looked flabbergasted. His face was completely red, and nonsensical words sputtered from his lips, as if he couldn’t quite come up with the right words to say. Suddenly amused, Lucas innocently put a hand on the Director’s shoulder. “What’s the matter which you, man?”
“Get off of me,” Keith hissed, shrugging Lucas’s arm off his shoulder. With a growl, his eyes narrowly followed the sole car pulling out of the camp. Lucas raised an eyebrow as the fumes radiating from the man’s ears nearly became visible. Without warning, the Director turned his spiteful gaze to the demon. “Don’t you have kids to watch or something?” With a click of his heels the man returned to his office, the door slamming loudly behind him.
Touché.
“As a matter of fact, I believe I do.” Teagan was gone now; he had no further reason to stay at the camp. Casually he walked up to one of the parked cars. None of them really fit his style, but then again, who drove a Selby Cobra to the middle of the Nevada National Forest. Settling with a green Cadillac, he expertly connected the wires beneath the dashboard and with a roar, the engine came to life.
Overall, phase one had been a success.
It was time for step two.
