Teagan peeked out from behind the doorway, checking the situation. Yuki hadn't stopped cooking yet...but had Aiden come through? Oh god, what if Yuki had thrown away their only hope of salvation for the night? Her eyes darted to the table, where a bag of burgers slouched against a tray of drinks. Thank the heavens.
Yuki made a loud declaration that she would indeed still eat her "exquisite" creation. Ha. If by 'exquisite' she meant was enough of an oddity to find itself stared at in disgust at some museum, then sure. What on earth was she making, anyway? Teagan's eyes drifted along the numerous ingredients lining the counter. No one should use that many things in one meal! And who in their right mind used pancake batter and green beans in the same week?
Teagan prayed that her newly stocked kitchen hadn't taken that hard of a blow. She had already been to the store twice that week; didn't want to go there for a third time.
Yuki turned around, and Teagan saw her opportunity. "Aiden," she whispered, still behind the door. "Are we clear?"

Finally, Aiden had to take a breath of air. The scent of the whatever-it-was burned his nostrils, and he now knew how Lori could have passed out. Yuki didn’t even look at him, so he took a defensive stance next to the food should she walk over and try to throw it away. He would say that he used his money for it, but then again…it was never really his money.
“Hey, like I said, I thought we agreed that you weren’t cooking tonight so we could recuperate. If you don’t want it—“ he paused, listening to her go on…did she just diss the shake?! “Look, I didn’t have to get you anything. If you won’t eat it, Teagan and I will. At least she appreciates when I get her food, not to mention I’m sure that she would wholeheartedly agree with me when I tell you that you’re wrong about the shake.”
“Fine, eat that…whatever it is,” Aiden said, not wanting to see the rest of the ingredients. Grabbing the bags and the drinks, he left the soda for Yuki, but took her shake—it was his now. He nodded at Teagan, walked out of the kitchen, and flicked the switch for the fan on the way out the door.
“Okay, let’s eat at the bar…far, far away from that stench,” he said quietly, pushing the door open and entering the bar, which was only occupied by a few other people. “Amelia, Lori is on break, bar is yours,” he said to the other bartender.

Teagan listened from the other side of the kitchen door, eavesdropping on the conversation. A pit had formed in her stomach when she heard Yuki start shouting at Aiden once she had seen the fast food. Was that girl seriously still referring to her as 'the child'? She was freakin' eighteen for crying aloud! As the shouting continued, her thoughts raced. What if Yuki didn't care that he had bought the food? What if she grabbed it and tossed it in the trash? Would they have to give up all pretense and start running? What if Yuki somehow managed to catch up and drag them back? Tied them to chairs and force-fed them her poisonous concoction?
Her eyes fell to Lori, who now lay motionless on the couch a few feet away. In an odd way, she was the lucky one in the situation. Sure the blond was unconscious on the couch, but that meant that she had a way out of eating any of Yuki's food. It obviously caused a "malicious reaction". Perhaps if Teagan was forced to try it, she could put something on her skin later that would mimic an allergic reaction. Then she'd never have to consume anything Yuki touched!
Fallback plan ready, she returned her concentration to the conversation behind her. Wait-had Yuki really given up that easy? Two ways to find out, one of them mustering up the courage to actually walk into the room. Too dangerous. Instead, Teagan fished her phone from out of her jean pockets and dialed Aiden's number. His ringtone drifted through the wall.
"Is is safe to eat yet?" she whispered once he picked up.
